Mastering the Art of Blending Design Styles

Imagine walking into a home where “two styles, one home” comes to life in a perfectly balanced, uniquely your space. Achieving that kind of design harmony may seem challenging, but with the right approach, it’s entirely possible.

Today, I’m revealing the secrets to seamlessly blending different styles into one stunning, cohesive space. Whether you’re looking to transform a single room or your entire home, these expert tips will help you combine two styles like a pro, creating a space that feels harmonious and uniquely yours.

Step 1: Identify Your Styles

The first step in any successful design project is identifying the styles you and your cohabitants are naturally drawn to.

It’s rare for everyone in a household to have the same design preferences, so understanding these differences is crucial. To make this process easier, we’ve created a simple design style quiz (linked below) to help you pinpoint your personal style.

Step 2: Gather Visual Inspiration

Once you’ve identified your styles, it’s time to start gathering visual references. Browse through magazines, Pinterest, or Instagram, and create mood boards that reflect the colors, textures, and elements from each style.

This step is key because it helps you visualize how different aesthetics can come together in your space.

Step 3: Find Common Ground

With your mood boards side by side, start looking for common elements. Shared colors, materials, and shapes can serve as the foundation for blending styles.

For example, rustic and farmhouse styles both feature raw wood and metal accents, while traditional and cottage styles often incorporate antique furniture and warm color palettes. Identifying these overlaps is crucial for creating a cohesive look.

Step 4: Balance Your Styles

Balance is the key to successfully mixing styles. Use the 80/20 rule: Let one style dominate about 80% of the space, while the other complements it with 20%.

For instance, if modern design makes up 80% of your space, you might introduce rustic elements through a wooden coffee table, textural rugs, and vintage accessories.

This approach not only showcases both styles but also creates an intriguing visual tension that enhances the overall design.

Step 5: Unify with Color

Color is a powerful tool for unifying different styles. Revisit your mood boards and look for common colors that can be used to tie the styles together.

Tonal colors often work well as a cohesive backdrop, allowing contrasting styles to coexist without clashing. If you want to add a pop of interest, do so with a contrasting accent color that highlights specific elements from each style.

Step 6: Layer Textures

Textures add depth and interest to your space, and layering them is an effective way to blend contrasting styles.

For example, pairing a sleek, modern marble table with the rough texture of an antique wooden chair creates a dynamic visual effect that enhances both styles.

Step 7: Add Personal Touches

Finally, don’t forget to add personal touches to your space. Display artwork, photos, or mementos that have special meaning to you and those you share your home with. These personal items bridge the gap between styles and make your space truly unique.
