Hey, design lovers! Today, I’m thrilled to share with you the details of an epic room makeover that we completed in just one weekend.
That’s right—only 48 hours to transform an uninspiring space into something truly magnificent. I’m spilling all the details and sharing my top designer tricks to help you tackle your own room makeover, no matter the timeframe.
Let’s start with the “before” shot. The room wasn’t the worst, but let’s be real—it needed a lot of love. We began with a turquoise feature wall that wasn’t doing anyone any favors, mismatched fabric panels flanking the windows, ill-fitting blinds, and less-than-fabulous furniture that the previous homeowners left behind. Safe to say, everything had to go.
This room is actually my son’s bedroom in our house up in his college town. With school just starting, I had to pull it together fast! My vision for this makeover was to create a warm, cozy space for him that also honored the home’s 1939 history.
The first step was to clear everything out and choose the perfect paint color. After sampling several different shades, my son and I landed on “Cloudy Sky” by Benjamin Moore.
This shade has incredible depth and provides the perfect backdrop for the warm wood tones and cozy fabrics I planned to layer into the space.
Next up: the bed. I wanted to keep the room as timeless as possible with the furnishings, but I also wanted my son to be involved in choosing the pieces. I gave him free rein, and he selected the Linea Panel Walnut Bed from Article.
It turned out beautifully, anchoring the room with its warm walnut finish and clean lines, adding that mid-century vibe he loves. This bed was an excellent choice because it’s well-made, timeless, and something he can use for years to come.
I styled it with three linen cushions tied to the headboard for a charming layered look. If your space needs a little spruce up, Article is offering $50 off your first purchase of $100 or more. The existing window treatments weren’t working for us, so I decided to take matters into my own hands—literally.
I pulled out my sewing machine and crafted new curtains that were functional, stylish, and under $40! They add color and pattern to the space, block out the early morning sun (a must-have for college kids), and give off a charming summer camp vibe.
With the windows sorted, it was time to bring in some furniture to make the room more functional. I added an antique chest with tons of drawer space for clothes.
Its rich, vintage vibe balances out the walnut bed on the opposite wall. I also brought in a fun little bamboo folding table for beside the bed, the perfect perch for a mid-century lamp that my son loves and has had in his bedroom for years.
For flooring, I chose a nubby wool rug to add softness to the original hardwood floors. I layered the bed with crisp cotton sheets, a taupe herringbone coverlet, a seersucker duvet cover for added warmth, and a mix of pillows and throws to complete the look.
No room is complete without art and accessories, and this room was screaming for some unique pieces! I kept it classic with all antique and vintage finds. We started with a vintage periodic table over the chest, which nods to my son’s love of science and chemistry.
Then, I layered in an antique painting, a piece of cedar art, a vintage hat rack, a small mirror, and some octopus art that I framed from an antique book. These layered pieces make the room feel so much more interesting and personal.
Finally, I styled the space with a stack of books, a small camp lamp, a stone tray, and some antique chemistry beakers that now hold a few branches clipped from our yard.
I couldn’t be happier with how this one-weekend room makeover turned out! The transformation is stunning, and it just goes to show that you don’t need weeks or months to create a beautiful, inviting space. It just takes a little planning and creativity.
I hope this space inspires you to roll up your sleeves and tackle your very own room makeover in a weekend. It can be done! If you’re looking for even more design inspiration, be sure to connect with me on Instagram and Pinterest.
